how do i set up a basic recording studio at home?
i want to try putting some songs together but i literally have no idea where to start or what to buy.
i'm not working so don't want to spend a lot of money.
what i have so far to work with is:
a laptop, an electronic drum kit (Roland TD-3), electric guitar, a bass, acoustic guitar, and a microphone.
does anyone know how i should go about doing this? haha. any software i'll need to download?
any suggestions would be appreciated
Sounds to me like you are very close already. All you need is:
1. Mic Preamps - to boost the relatively weak signal from your microphone and instruments.
2. Phantom Power - if you are going to use a condenser style studio microphone.
3. A/D Converter - to take the electrical signal from your mic / instruments and convert it into a digital form the computer can understand.
4. Recording Software - to manage / mix the different tracks of your recording session.
All 4 of these can be taken care of with a USB Audio Interface such as this:
http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/PreSonus-AudioBox-USB-2X2-USB-Recording-System?sku=243007&CJAID=10381297&CJPID=3838583
The included software (studio 1 artist) is pretty slick and will be enough to get you started. Throw in some MIDI cables for your e-drum kit, an XLR for the microphone, and a few 1/4" instrument cables and you're all set.
