John Martyn

I first came across John Martyn Back in the late 60's, hanging around the folk clubs in England. As a relative newcomer to the guitar, I was instantly mesmerised by his catchy style.

I think I bought just about every record he produced, but I've lost most of them.

I live in Perth Australia now, and I remember driving to work in January, and hearing the morning chat show host announce that John Martyn had died. I had stopped paying attention to what he was up to many years ago, so was jolted by the announcement.

Of course I jumped onto Youtube to see what there was. First thing - I was shocked at how sick he had become, in a wheelchair, no less. Now there was a man who lived life to the full and way beyond!

One of my favorite songs of his was "May You Never". I've got thre videos here for you to watch. The first is from 1973, a recording from an old regular TV show - "The Old Grey Whistle Test". Certainly hadn't thought of THAT show for a good 30 years or so!

The second is John singing the same song in 2007. Looking very sick, but still belting out a good tune!

And, for you guitar pickers out there, the third one is a slowed-down version, to show the guitar work. You can also find the guitar tab here:

JM was the best. I saw him in Glasgow in the 80s and loved most everything he did.

Except perhaps his electric guitar phase when he was married to Beverley – preferred his accoustic music.
