I'm a beginning guitar player too... My advice is to start out by purchasing a book filled with diagrams of positions for some beginning chords. Some good chords to start learning would be G, G2, C, C2, D, Em, and Am. A good beginning chord progression to learn is G2, C2, D, as it is an easier way to transition from chord to chord than G, C, D. If you learn those chords and that progression, you will be able to play a good amount of songs in the key of G. Repetition is very important in chord progressions because it will speed up your transitions - don't worry if they're slow at first, you'll get better . A good song for working out the G2, C2, D chord progression is called "Holy is the Lord" by Chris Tomlin, it is also a good song for getting used to most of the chords for the key of G.
